Five Things to Consider Before a Digital Signage Installation

A lot of preparation goes into a digital signage implementation, and there are a variety of factors to consider before your GoLive day.

Prior to scheduling an implementation, a thorough understanding of the process is in order. In addition to hardware, things like software, audience and content curation must also be explored. The following are five things to consider prior to placing your digital signage:

1.     Environment

Your physical space should be one of your first considerations when implementing digital signage. You should be asking yourself: "where do I want my message delivered?" It will help you to determine the types of digital signage applications you’ll need.

For example, if your signage is placed in a space that is accessible to the public, then perhaps you should consider hardware and content that enables interactivity. Knowing the viewing distance of your audience and whether or not they can touch the screen is a big factor in digital signage implementation. If your target audience is on-the-go, a mobile solution may work best for your needs. Or, maybe your organization would benefit from a mix of interactive, static and mobile applications—either way, your physical space will help determine exactly what you need.

The environment the display is installed in should also be considered. How is the lighting? Will the display be indoors or outdoors? Does the traffic in the space change depending on the time of day? Do you need more than one display to get your message across? All of these details will help you plot out exactly where and how your signage will be used.

2.     Content Creation

Creating and curating content for digital signage is not always an easy task and is often the area business owners find the most difficult to manage. Preparing for digital signage most assuredly entails a deeper understanding of your audience and what they really want to see

Consider the type of content you need to leverage. Will it be displaying emergency content or will it be used for wayfinding? Knowing the space in which your digital signage is installed, and what it will be used for, will help determine what your content should look like.

3.     Hardware

Once you have an understanding of placement and content, it's time to consider the type of screen you wish to use. Digital signage hardware can include LCD screens, LED boards, tablets, mobile devices and interactive touchscreens. These types of screens are utilized depending on a variety of factors, like indoor/outdoor placement and customer accessibility. When choosing the right display technology, keep in mind who you want to see it, how you want to use it and where you want to place it.

You should also consult FWI's expert hardware team for your assembly configuration and testing. We can help you map out your hardware and make the best recommendations for your desired use case. From AV-design to CAD renderings, it is important to methodically plot out your digital signage hardware setup prior to implementation.

4.     Physical Installation

Before a team arrives at the site for your Visual Communications installation there are a few things that need to be complete:

- All enclosures should be mounted
- All content assets provided
- All displays and peripherals should be mounted
- All hardware has power and network connectivity

5.     GoLive

It is imperative that after installation, an extensive QA is conducted to make sure your solution designs are fully tested, your data integrations are complete and verified and everything is operational. FWI's implementation experts will inspect the entire signage network to ensure it is running as planned.
